Using Citations

Introduction

By definition, writing an analytical paper involves analyzing source materials to make an argument. However, while you are free to quote and describe these source materials (original texts, literary criticisms, etc.) in your paper, you must give credit to the author of these materials when you use their words or ideas to further your argument. This involves using citations throughout your paper and including a Bibliography or Works Cited page with your drafts. In the English major, the citation style most often used is MLA. MLA style involves using parenthetical citations in the text of your paper.
