Commenting on Sacred Texts
When commenting
on a sacred passage, remember to focus on both content and
meaning. What is the chain of events? Who are the key players?
Keep this information to the bare minimum (one sentence).
Do not over summarize the passage, especially if the chain
of events is self-explanatory.
For a
quick and informative lesson on the difference between summary
and interpretation, including examples, see the Writing
Center's online presentation.
When writing
about the meaning of the passage, ask yourself:
- Why
are the actions and people significant?
- What
does this passage mean to the rest of the reading? To the
sacred text in its entirety?
- What
is the historical significance?
- What
do other scholars (if applicable) have to say about the
importance of the passage?
See sample
outline and passage
commentary.
