1) All signs are not isolated—they are part of a culture, a group, a historical time. Father Knows Best, My Three Sons, and Bachelor Father are all a part of a time and culture, a mythology/ideology.
2) All signs change meaning when placed in a new/different context.
The Beatles had a different cultural meaning in the early 60s, the late 60s, and in the 90s. (SOL, 2nd 7-12)
The Sex Pistols signified punk, anarchy, anti-establishment in the 70s. In the 90s they signified brash/ironic/self-conscious commercialism.
