se, other than in individual countries. However, there are very
good sites whose main subjects are part and parcel of any definition
of democracy.
Center for the Study of Democracy
At the University of California-Irvin, this is the best available
site on the normative and empirical aspects of democracy.
National Endowment for Democracy
A US government agency whose mission is to help build democracies.
International Institute
for Democracy and Electoral Assistance
H as practical information for building democracy
International Foundation for Electoral
Systems
M onitors changes in electoral law around the world.
Inter-Parliamentary Union
D oes the same for national legislatures.
Institute for the Study of Civic Values
Run by Ed Schwartz, a combination academic and activist, the Institute
focuses on the all-important link between civil society and political
culture on the one hand and democracy on the other. Unfortunately, like
many such sites, it focuses all but exclusivly on the United States.
Deliberative Democracy
A consortium of organizations dedicated to finding new ways to use information
technology to enhance the ablity of average citizens to participate
in political life.
US State Department
The State Department's take on what democracy entails. Written for kids,
but still worth a look.
Election World
Recent elections results from anywhere and everywhere. Includes links
to all existing political party websites.
