Announcing a New Book Series
International Relations in the Twenty First Century

Cassell Academic Publishers is pleased to announce the launch of an innovative new book series on international relations in the twenty first century. Ranging from international political economy, to security, to the newer issues of migration, human rights, and environment, the series is designed to explore the issues that make IR such an exciting, controversial, and, at times, confusing field during this period of unprecedented change.

We believe that students best master the complicated arena of international relations by moving regularly back and forth between theory and case studies. The books, therefore, will combine conceptual and empirical material in a way that encourages the reader to use the examples to illustrae and test the theories that are at the heart of our discipline. The cases will be chosen to make it as easy as possible for students to grasp the general problems and prospects of the portion of IR covered in each volume.

The books will be written so they can serve as the core text in advanced undergraduate and specialized graduate courses. They will provide the foundation in these courses, so that students approach additional readings and reserach with an informed perspective. Each volume will follow the same basic format. A first section will be devoted to the general theories and concepts which scholars have developed on the topic. The second half will include a small number of carefully selected cast studies that students can use to deepen their understanding of the theoretical issues. The first five volumes will appear in early 2000.

The series will also take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Internet. The books themselves will include addresses of particularly helpful web sites (and other new services as they become available) as an integral part of the text. More importantly, the series editors have already begun developing a web site for the entire series. It will provide more extensive links to Internet-based resources in IR, an on-line non-linear study guide that spans all the volumes, and a forum through which students and professors using the books work collaboratively, wherever they happen to be.

The series will be edited by:
