Success Stories: European American teacher and a Sikh student

European American Teacher and a Sikh Student

A male physical education teacher was so "puzzled" by a Sikh student who refused to remove his turban for physical education (PE) class that he suspended him from class (see Quinn & Jacob, 1999). The school's Child Study Committee explored with the physical education teacher both his beliefs about what was required for "changing into gym clothes" and Sikh beliefs about males' turbans. After the teacher understood the points of conflict between his own beliefs and the student's, he met with the student, and they discussed their cultural differences. The teacher then allowed the student to wear his turban to PE class in addition to the required gym clothes.
