4.2.1 Gather information about competition in school culture and its role in a puzzlement.

If you think competition might be contributing to the puzzling situation you are examining, you might start by identifying and examining instances of competition in the practices of your classroom and school--including rituals, celebrations, publications, slogans, behavior management strategies, and requirements for grading. How is success defined and measured? How frequently are competitive processes involved in determining who is "successful"? See Goldman and McDermott (1987) and Smith, Gillmore, Goldman and McDermott (1993) for some specific examples.

You can explore the role of competition on students' performance and behavior by observing how a student or group performs or behaves in contexts that vary in their form and degree of competition. You might also interview students about their interpretations and responses to competition.
