4.2.2 Gather information about tracking or ability grouping

If you think tracking or ability-grouping might be contributing to the puzzling situation you are examining, a first step might be to examine how pervasive ability-grouping or tracking are in your school, talking to administrators and other educators if needed. Then you might use school or classroom records to examine how ability-groupings or tracks vary by ethnicity, social classes, gender, etc., constructing tables using these dimensions.

Further, you could elicit students' or parents' perceptions of ability-groupings or tracks and their influences on students' behavior and academic engagement.
