Steps: 4 Gather Information > 4.5-Cultural Negotiations > 4.5.1-Home, Peer & School Cultures

4.5.1 Gather information about individual students' negotiations of home, peer, and school cultures.

To understand students' perspectives and experiences, in-depth interviews over a period of time are an important tool. If students have been to different schools or had different educational experiences, a life history approach could be very useful. Establishing rapport and trust is critical so an atmosphere is created where students can discuss potentially difficult experiences.

Participant observation of students in a variety of settings inside and outside school could also provide useful information.

For an example of a study in the Washington, D.C., area that used Phelan, Davidson, and Yu's (1998) Multiple Worlds Model as its framework, see Grossman's (2001/2002) study of Dominican American adolescents.

If you haven't read the CIP pages for Step 4 or Step 4.5, please do so because they provide information about gathering information for your CIP project.
