4.5.2 Gather information about individual students' negotiations of their cultural identities.

In-depth interviews conducted over a period of time are an important tool for understanding the construction of students' identities. Participant observation of students inside and outside school, with special attention to naturally-occurring interactions, could also provide useful information. Nasir and Saxe (2003) and Davidson (1996) illustrated how analysis of interactions can lead to insights about students' negotiations of their identities.

To understand the role of school or neighborhood contexts in the construction of identities, it would be important to examine contexts that support different kinds of student identities. Observations in those contexts, as well as interviews with participants, could be useful ways to collect information.

If you haven't read the CIP pages for Step 4 or Step 4.5, please do so because they provide information about gathering information for your CIP project.
