Success Stories and CIP Studies Related to Educational Practitioners' Beliefs or Values

Success Stories are published reports that demonstrate how taking particular cultural or social issues into account can improve educational practice and students' learning. CIP studies are reports in which educational practitioners used the CIP to examine a particular cultural or social issue related to their practice; all proper names within the studies are pseudonyms.

Because of the Kids
Over a period of time, a European American teacher examined and reflected on her assumptions related to her African American students. Her changed expectations and behavior led to improved relationships with her students, who became more respectful of her and more accepting of her authority.

European American Teacher and a Sikh Student
A conflict between a Sikh student and a gym teacher over the dress code wasresolved through cultural understanding.

CIP Studies

Homework: To Do or Not To Do? (2002)
A study of homework in the 3rd grade, which started with a focus on a Latino boy and then expanded to a broader focus.

I'm Going to Fail (2003)
A study of a female Muslim honor role student who struggled with her high school mathematics course.


Positive Discipline and Assertive Discipline (2000)
An examination of the culture of a 2nd grade classroom related to the use of two discipline systems.


A Resource Teacher’s Role in the Regular Classroom (2003)
A Standards of Learning (SOL) resource teacher examined how differences in the cultures of her third and fifth grade classes and her own perceptions of the role of an SOL teacher affected student achievement and her own interactions with the students and teachers.
