Against repetition: Addressing resistance to anti-oppressive change in the practices of learning, teaching, supervising, and researching
This article appeared in Harvard Educational Review, Spring 2002, Volume 72, Issue 1. The author, Kevin K. Kumashiro, advocates the practice of questioning traditional assumptions about education, learning, knowledge, privilege and identity as a means of eliminating oppressive pedagogical activities. The article discusses popular concepts about sexual orientation as one means of implicitly "marginalizing" populations that do not "participate" in the culture of those in power. He discusses the educators' role in supporting self-questioning as a means of eliminating unconscious oppression. Perceptions of homophobia and heterosexism in physical education
This article appeared in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, June 2003, Volume 74, Issue 2. The authors, Ronald G. Morrow and Diane L. Gill, report that their study of physical education settings indicate, " homophobic and heterosexist behaviors are common in secondary schools, that teachers intend to provide a safe space, and that teachers fail to confront heterosexist or homophobic behaviors and take proactive steps to create an inclusive environment."
