Classroom Management - Summary
An adapted excerpt from the book, "Schoolwide and Classroom Management: The Reflective Educator-Leader," by L.A. Froyen and A.M. Iverson. This excerpt deals with strategies to help educators manage individual student behavior, group interactions, and the teaching of subject material to a diverse population. The book is maintained in the George Mason University Library catalog at the Johnson Center, however, it may be sent to any GMU library location for pickup using InterCAMPUS Lending Services. This research by the Indiana Education Policy Center studied the relationship between moderate to severe disciplinary actions and race, socioeconomic status, and gender.

"Managing Hot Moments in the Classroom," a paper from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University by Lee Warren. It describes, “strategies for turning difficult encounters into learning opportunities [that] enable us to address important, but hot, topics -- religion, politics, race, class, gender -- in our classroom discussions.” (reviewed 11/15/03)
Positive behavior support: A proactive strategy for minimizing behavior problems in urban multicultural youth
This article by Cheryl A Utley, Elizabeth Kozleski, Anne Smith, and Ingrid L Draper appeared in the Fall 2002, Volume 4, Issue 4 of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions. It “examines trends in the racial disparity in exclusionary discipline procedures that impact the schooling experiences of urban children, presents a conceptual framework for understanding culturally influenced social behaviors, and discusses ways to incorporate multicultural education into PBS [Positive Behavior Support] programs.” The article and other similar articles from this journal can be read online at the

Restorative Justice and School Violence: Building Theory and Practice
A paper presented at the International Conference on Violence in Schools and Public Policies, Palais de l'UNESCO, Paris, March 5-7, 2001 by Brenda Morrison from the Center for Restorative Justice at the Research School of Social Sciences,Australian National University. It "explore[s] recent developments in the building of theory and practice in the area of restorative justice, particularly in terms of addressing one form of school violence — school bullying."
