Using the CIP Guidebook

START READING HERE> The frame below shows the first page of the CIP Guidebook. You can always get to this page by clicking on Guidebook in the sidebar on the left.

The CIP Guidebook presents the seven steps of the Cultural Inquiry Process, along with relevant cultural information to help educators address their puzzlements related to culturally diverse classrooms and schools in the United States.

To facilitate use of the Guidebook several paths (Overview, Considering Alternate Cultural Influences, and Exploring One or More Questions in Detail) are provided through the Guidebook. Instructions for how to use each path follow.

Overview

This path provides an overview of the seven steps of the CIP.

After you have reviewed the pages for each step, the next tutorial will walk you through using the CIP Guidebook to consider alternate cultural influences as part of exploring a puzzlement.

Considering Alternate Cultural Influencess

To use the CIP Guidebook to address a puzzlement, open the "Cultural Inquiry Process Steps" page by clicking on the CIP "Steps" in the header of the page in the frame below. Start by selecting a focus and identifying your puzzlement about that focus (Navigate or click to Step 1 in the frame below). Then summarize what is already known about your focus (Navigate or click to Step 2 below).

Then consider possible cultural influences by reading the CIP questions (Navigate or click to Step 3 below). Before deciding to explore one or more CIP questions in detail, it is good to consider them all.

  • To begin considering the various CIP questions, click on the first question (3.1) in the frame below.
  • To consider the next question (question 3.2) click on the "Consider next question" link at the bottom of the text on the page, just above the horizontal line that separates the footer from the body of the page.
  • Question 3.2 has subquestions. You should read them all before considering any subsequent questions. To consider the first subquestion (question 3.2.1), either click on the subquestion link in the text on the page or click on the "Consider next question" link at the bottom of the text on the page, just above the horizontal line that separates the footer from the body of the page.
  • Continue through the remaining questions in Step 3.

Many of the CIP questions and subquestions have links to related CIP Studies (examples of CIP studies conducted by educators) and Success Stories (summaries of research studies that have successfully developed interventions based on the issues identified in the question or subquestion).

  • To return to the a question from the CIP Studies or Success Stories, use the "Back" button on your browser.

Exploring One of More Questions in Detail

After identifying one or more CIP question(s) you want to consider in detail, move to Steps 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the CIP. Each of the questions and subquestions in Step 3 has parallel information under Step 4 and Step 5.

  • To get to the section of Steps 4 and 5 that parallel a question in Step 3, either (a) find the parallel number (4.2.1 or 5.2.1 for question 3.2.1) on the page for Step 4 or Step 5, or (b) follow the links at the bottom of the page of the appropriate question in Step 3.

To view an example of the latter option in the frame below, go to Question 3.2.1 (How might competition, be contributing to the puzzling situation?).

Immediately above the horizontal line that separates the footer from the body of the text, is a set of "process links" designed to help you move through the CIP Web site as you conduct your CIP study (for example, "Consider next question: 3.2.2" and "Gather information on this question: 4.2.1" are the process links at the bottom of the Step 3.2.1 page below). The process link(s) take you either to previous or subsequent CIP steps. Open a screen layout diagram for a CIP Step 3 page in the window below and identify how the process links support the study of this CIP question.

On the pages for Step 4 and Step 5 the last process link takes you to the "Guide for Reading Step 4 and Step 5 pages." Open a screen layout diagram for a CIP Step 4 page in the window below and identify how the process links support this CIP step. To view the process links in an actual step 4 page in the frame below, go to the process links on the Step 4.2.1 page.

Other Aids

There is also a tutorial for Navigating with Headers and Footers.

The Tools section of the Web site provides directions for printing pages of the Guidebook. It also provides guidelines for using your word processor or for working online.
