Help on Searches

The CIP Search Engine allows you to customize searches by changing the "match," "format," or "sort by" options on the Search Engine form. You can fine tune the results you get from your searches by changing the match method (Match). You can determine how the search results are displayed: use the (Format) option to specify the amount of detail provided in the search results, or, use the (Sort by) option to specify the order in which the results are displayed.

Match

This selection returns a match by All, Any or Boolean methods.

By selecting "All," you are requesting that the search results contain at least one instance of each word that you have specified. For example, if you search using the words "music Spanish elementary," you will get results containing the titles of every page containing at least one instance of the word music, and the word Spanish and the word elementary. They will not necessarily by contiguous but may be scattered throughout the searched text.

By selecting "Any," you are requesting that the search results contain at least one instance of any one of the words that you are using for your search. For example, if you search using the words "music Spanish elementary," you will get results containing the titles of every page containing at least one instance of the word music, or the word Spanish, or the word elementary. This will also return page titles containing more than one of the search words.

By selecting "Boolean," you are requesting a search in which you will specify exactly how you want the search words to be matched using Boolean operators. This technique can provide more precise and flexible searches that yield better results. Using Boolean Logic describes this more advanced search method.

Format

This selection returns a results page that contains the titles and descriptions of the pages that contain the matched text. All instances of the matched text will appear in bold characters. By selecting "Short," you will get a results page displaying only the titles of the pages containing the matches.

Sort by

This selection determines the order that your results will be displayed. By choosing "Score," the results will be displayed by order of the best match indicated by one or more stars with the most stars indicating the best match. By choosing "Time," the results will be displayed by order of the time it took to make the match. By choosing "Title," the results will be displayed alphabetically by title. Usually, it may best to use the default "Score."
