| Update
on British Politics
Not much has happened in British politics since the fourth edition of comparative politics went to press. One event and one trend, however, are worth noting. First, the IRA has continued to decommission its weapons. While few have actually been destroyed, an unknown--but significant--number have been "put beyond use." Second, British politicians are debating what the country's role should be if the United States decided to attack Iraq. Since September 11, the UK has been the Bush Administration's staunchest ally, and it initially seemed as if the Blair Government would support such an attack. However, since mid-summer support for any such action has dwindled, and in late August, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw announced that the government favored the reintroduction of UN weapons inspectors but did not support any stepped-up military action.
