Professional Biography


Catherine Karl Wright, PhD

Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication with fourteen years of university teaching, student advising, and research experience.  Course load includes:  public speaking, interpersonal communication, business & professional communication, small-group communication, mass media and society, and interpersonal communication in the workplace courses.  Teaching technique emphasizes presentation skills, writing skills, and the integration of technology into coursework and assignments as well as other projects based on theoretical foundations of communication.  Research interests include computer-mediated communication (CMC), diffusion of innovation, and small-group communication and online learning communities (OLC).  Presentations at conferences have included cross-disciplinary research in Communication, Education, and Business, exploring theoretical perspectives.

She has conducted a variety of training courses for both military and civilians on different government facilities. Her 14-year training/teaching background includes teaching at numerous universities and colleges and has focused on both technical as well as business areas. Additionally, Catherine has authored numerous professional papers, articles, and training manuals and has been published in the Southwestern Mass Communication Journal.

While involved with the Virginia Association of Communication Arts and Sciences (VACAS), she presented several professional papers on investigating the use of email and investigation of TIP theory in computer-mediated communication and online learning at a communication association convention and a paper on blended learning at a learning technology conference.

Currently, Catherine is active with the Eastern Communication Association (ECA). During her involvement with this organization, she has presented numerous papers, chaired several panels, been Chair of the Communication and Technology Interest Group, and is currently the Chair for an Ad Hoc Committee for Public Relations.

Catherine is a member of the National Communication Association (NCA), the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), and the Virginia Association of Communication Arts and Sciences (VACAS).

Catherine completed her Ph.D. studies in Communication from Regent University in May 2005. She earned her Masters of Arts degree in Mass Communication from Texas Tech University, Texas in May 1994 and her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Communication from Phillips University, Oklahoma in April 1992.
