Allow yourself sufficient time to prepare and revise your essays. With
take-home essay exams, teachers expect essays that are well thought out,
well supported by evidence, and clearly written and edited. As with in-class
essay writing, read questions carefully, underlining verbs, and making
notes. In fact, it’s a good idea to read the questions, put them aside,
and read again to make sure you understand clearly what you are supposed
to do.
-
Make brief notes about what you know of the expectations of your teacher(s).
-
If you don’t find formal outlines useful in your writing process, you may
find it is a good idea to make an informal or scratch outline for an essay
exam.
-
As you write each essay, re-read to make sure your answer is coherent.
-
Try to budget time so that you can re-read your answers after they’ve “cooled
off.” Make sure you’ve addressed all of the parts of each question. Revise
and edit your work as needed.
