Russian has five major vowels which come in "hard" and "soft" versions. Listen to the vowels on the chart below. Try to listen from left to right to hear the difference between each horizontal pair. These vowels work as pairs or partners. After you have listened to these vowels and are comfortable with them, practice them with consonants. This will help you understand what these vowels do to the consonants they follow.
