Dr. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Rochester (1968)and Masters (1969) and PhD (1974) degrees in Statistics from Stanford University. He taught at Rutgers University (1972 - 1979). Dr. Miller came to the Mathematical Sciences Department at George Mason in 1979. When the School of Information Technology and Engineering (now the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering) was formed, he moved to the Department of Systems Engineering. When this department split, he was in the Department of Operations Research and Applied Statistics, which also split into separate departments. Dr. Miller has been in the Department of Applied and Engineering Statistics (now the Department of Statistics) since its creation in 1992.

Dr. Miller has taught courses from the introductory undergraduate to advanced PhD level . The subjects of these courses include basic statistics, probability, mathematical statistics, regression analysis, analysis of variance, multivariate statistics, and categorical data analysis, among others. (See below for links to specific courses.) Dr. Miller's research specialties lie mainly in the linear models area. He is especially interested in bringing new statistical techniques into applied fields. He has published papers in several applied and theoretical journals, including The Annals of Statistics, The Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, The American Statistician, and The Psychological Bulletin.

Dr. Miller has extensive experience in working with academic psychologists, biologists, and educators. Dr. Miller is a founding principal of the Statistical Consulting Center of the Department of Statistics. He also has over 25 years experience in statistical consulting with commercial, government, and judicial clients. He has consulted for the United States Departments of Labor, Transportation, Commerce, and Justice, the Naval Research Lab, as well as other private and public institutions. Dr. Miller is a co-principal investigator in the Document Forensics Lab at GMU.
