| "Etiquette" generally means the behaviors and social conventions commonly
agreed upon by members, or imposed by some authority, in a particular society.
Online etiquette is called "netiquette," combining the words "net" (short
for Internet) and "etiquette.
You will be expected to use online communication for your integrative
studies courses and to be an informed New Century College student. You
will be expected to join the appropriate listservs and use various electronic
communications mediums.
When we communicate electronically, we are performing a social act in
a society which transcends local and international boundaries. Within that
society are sub cultures, such as groups of friends, students and faculty
in a class, and larger groups bound by a common interest. The members may
never meet in person and may be scattered around the world.
If you spend any time communicating online with a group that shares
a common interest, you will come to understand their behavior guidelines.
When you join online groups you may receive an e-mail with the group's
netiquette rules. You may be removed from the group if you do not follow
the rules.
When you communicate via e-mail, a Web-based forum, or other digital
medium, you and your audience cannot hear each other's tone, or see each
other's facial expressions or gestures. Misunderstandings can easily occur
because of these factors. In general, if you treat others as you like to
be treated, and think before you "speak" electronically, you will be a
good citizen in cyberspace.
Guard your own privacy
and respect the privacy
of others.
