NCLC 110: Community of Learners - Fall 2001 Resources for students Disability Support Services: If you have a learning or physical difference that may affect your academic work, you will need to furnish appropriate documentation to the office of Disability Support Services (993-2474). If you qualify for accommodation, the DSS staff will provide you with a form to give to your professors. These forms should be given to faculty at the beginning of every semester. Besides providing your professors with the appropriate form, please take the initiative to discuss accommodation with them throughout the term. Because of the range of learning differences, faculty need to learn from you how you how to assist you. If you have contacted the Disability Support Services office and are waiting to hear from them, please alert your seminar leader. Library: During Unit I you will be exploring the resources of the University's Libraries, which are housed in the Johnson Center and in Fenwick Library. GMU Librarians Jim Young (jyoung8@gmu.edu) and Kevin Simons (ksimons@gmu.edu), in the Johnson Center library, are happy to meet with NCC students for help with research. Feel free to email them and make an appointment. Writing: Online Writing Guide for Integrative Studies Students: This Writing Guide is specifically tailored for New Century students and includes guidelines for essay exams, choosing a topic and narrowing focus, research strategies, documentation, online writing, reflective & portfolio writing, presentations, resumes, collaborative writing, avoiding plagiarism, and other resources. For writing requirements for a particular course, please check with your faculty. Writing Center: Located in Robinson A116, the Writing Center (993-1200) provides, at no charge, tutors who can help you develop ideas and revise papers. There are times when the Writing Center can accommodate walk-ins, but generally it's best to call for an appointment. The services of the Writing Center are also available online. Computer/Internet: University e-mail and mason account policies University individual Web page policies Net-etiquette - Virginia Shea E-mail accounts: There is no charge for e-mail accounts. Most new NCC students have an e-mail account on the new MEMO system.You need to activate your MEMO account before you can use your e-mail. To access your MEMO account from home, once you have activated your account, type http://mail.gmu.edu in your Web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) location/address "window." Directions for using MEMO E-mail As the NCC Student Handbook notes, it is your responsibility to check your e-mail frequently. In addition, many course materials for this and subsequent courses will be posted on the Web. Access to your GMU e-mail is available from the public computers on campus as well as via modem from off-campus. If you need help with a software package, please stop in the Student Technology Assistance and Resource Center (STAR) in the Johnson Center room 229. For help with creating web-pages visit Web.STAR in the Johnson Center room 311. New Century College Freshmen Listserv: Once you have activated
your MEMO e-mail account, please be sure to join
the freshmen list. All freshmen are expected to join the list.
Web accounts: Activate your mason account to create your Web directory and publish Web pages. This is a necessary step since this course and other NCC courses require students to publish some of their work on their student Web pages. Hemlock Overlook: The mission of Hemlock Overlook - Center for Outdoor Education, operated jointly by Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and George Mason University, is to facilitate, educate, and involve individuals and organizations in experimental and/or outdoor education programs which will foster personal growth and team leadership skills while developing an appreciation for the natural environment. There are numerous resources on campus to help you make your academic and personal experience here at Mason successful. The Counseling Center (993-2380) provides not only individual and group sessions for personal development, but also offers academic skill-building workshops as well as individualized training in their Self-Development Center (993-2999). The Center for Service and Leadership (993-2900; Enterprise Hall) is a good place to start if you are interested in getting involved in campus and community activities. This center sponsors numerous programs and activities that will help you develop leadership skills and gain valuable experience. |
