How to Create Your Own Home Page at GMU

To create your New Century College student Web site you need to do three things:
  • Access your mason account on the server and set up the space for your Web site.
  • Create the "home" page for your student Web site using html code
  • Learn to use free Web authoring software to edit and create Web pages.

Part I  Setting up the space for your Web page

1. Log on to your osf1/mason account.

2. While at the mason or osf1.gmu.edu> prompt, type: cd [Press Enter] The initial prompt will reappear each time you press Enter. Then go on to each new instruction below.

3. Then type: cd ..
(Be sure to insert a space between the d and the periods) [Press Enter]

4. Then type: chmod a+x username
(Put your email name - WITHOUT the extension - in place of username). [Press Enter]

5. Then type: chmod go-rw username
(Put your email name - WITHOUT the extension - in place of username). [Press Enter]

6. Then type: cd [Press Enter]

7. Then type: mkdir public_html
(This creates a directory in which you put your Web pages.) [Press Enter]

8. Then type: chmod a+x public_html
(This changes the protection on the public_html directory so the world can "execute" files in it.) [Press Enter] [You need never do these instructions again!]

Congratulations. You have created your directory and set it up so that people can read your Web material.  Now on to Part II!
