Student
Resources and Support Services
A. Writing Aids
Although you have been writing extensively over the course of this
first year, learning to write well for different purposes and
audiences is an ongoing learning process for all of us. Thus, we
encourage you to take advantage of two resources that are available
to students and faculty:
1. The New
Century College On-Line Writing Guide can be accessed at
classweb.gmu.edu/nccwg/.
This guide was developed specifically for NCC students. Unit IV
faculty encourage you to use this guide.
2. GMU
Writing Center offers a variety of services to assist
students in developing writing skills. The website (http://writingcenter.gmu.edu)
provides information on these topics: how to complete various writing
and presentation assignments, availability of walk-in and scheduled
appointments, and how to upload drafts of papers in order to receive
online feedback from center tutors. The Writing Center is located in
A114 Robinson Hall with a branch in 040 Enterprise Hall; phone number
is 993-1200.
B. Disability Resources
Any student with documented learning disabilities or other conditions
that may affect academic performance, should: 1) make sure
this documentation is on file with the Office of Disability Support
Services (993-2474) to determine accommodations you might need; 2)
provide a copy of the DSS form to his or her instructors for each
course; and 3) meet with instructors to discuss learning
needs. For more information contact the GMU Disability Resource
Center’s web page at
www.gmu.edu/student/drc.
C. Counseling Center
Counseling programs and services are free of charge for all GMU
students. The Center offers counseling, learning, and multicultural
services to help students achieve academic and personal
success. For more information, contact the Center staff at
703-993-2380,
www.gmu.edu/departments/csdc, or go to SUB I, Room 364.
D. Library Services
The NCC liaison at the Johnson Center Library is Jim Young (jyoung8@gmu.edu).
Professor Young is a tremendous resource for NCC students and we
encourage you to meet with him to discuss GMU research resources.
