Reading to Gather Writing Techniques

One of the best ways to develop strong writing techniques is to read. Prof. Clark notes that "good writing comes from an understanding of what good reading is." He goes further to say that the best writing to read for help with future writing assignments is most likely to be found in class reading materials because these materials are usually chosen with student readers in mind. Reading the class materials that are assigned not only serves to equip you with the information you need to discuss important ideas in writing but also provides you with models of academic writing.

Secondary materials, those that are found in sources other than your textbook, can also be extremely useful. Often in Government 101, Prof. Clark remarks, secondary reading materials consist of writings by other scholars about the topics presently being discussed in your class. After reading several different opinions about an idea introduced by Plato, for instance, you will start to understand what it means to analyze and discuss an idea, along with giving your own reactions to the idea.
