History of Western Civilization

This is a picture of Europa, the mythical princess after whom the continent of Europe is named. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus finds this mysterious, since in the myth Europa is born in Tyre (in modern Syria) and is transported by Zeus - by means of a bull - over the sea to Crete, an island south of mainland Greece. She never sets foot in continental Europe, Herodotus points out.
